Following reports from IESB last week, gleaned from its interview with producer Lauren Shuler Donner, Twentieth Century Fox has confirmed that work has been started on a spin-off vehicle for Deadpool. It will indeed be produced by Donner along with Marvel.
The news means that the character, who appears in the X-Men comics on numerous occasions and appeared in the first five-ten minutes of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, will get a movie all to himself with Ryan Reynolds to reprise the role he oh so briefly played in the film.
The Deadpool character in Wolverine was involved in one of the easter egg endings attached to the film. In that ending, the character stands up after having his head chopped off, picks up his decaptitated bonce and whispers “shhh” to the audience.
The Variety confirmation of the story notes that during the Marvel Comics Deadpool, who is a mercenary that, dying of cancer, submits himself to the Weapon X genetic alternation experiment and emerges as an invincible, somewhat crazy anti-hero, is referred to briefly as a mix of ‘Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds’.
As if the Wolverine/X-Men related news can never stop, the article also confirms the plans mentioned yesterday for a Wolverine sequel involving a samurai storyline as well as a Magneto spin-off and the Josh Schwartz-penned X-Men: First Class.
If you thought there were too many comic book movies before, just you wait.
An addendum to all this, Alan Kistler on Splash Page has a guide to the five Deadpool stories to read to prepare you for the movie. I will probably follow his prescription.
