The series, created by Shoji Gatoh, follows an anti-terrorist commando called Sousuke Sagara who is tasked with the protection of a high school girl with mystical powers.
Efron’s star power right now is pretty strong, but only really among those younger audiences. This would probably skew their way but he doesn’t seem to be wanting to hit that road at present, although the HR does not he has also been linked with a role in Johnny Quest.
The acid test for Efron will come in the next week as his first big post-HSM project, the age-swap comedy 17 Again, opens up. Although the posters have worked hard to show him shirtless, I’m not fully convinced as to how much pull he really has, something evidenced by the lack of showing thus far for Me and Orson Welles, his ‘serious’ acting debut under the hand of director Richard Linklater.
I imagine fans of the series will immediately fling a visceral reaction the way of Efron for simply being related to HSM, but I’m not fussed by his past. Whether he does have true star quality though, we’ll wait and see.
