OC creator Josh Schwartz is to join the movie world with an adaptation/remake of the Jay McInerney novel Bright Lights, Big City. The film was previously made in 1988 starring Michael J Fox, Kiefer Sutherland and, just to make it truly 1980s, Phoebe Cates.
Schwartz seems to be carving out a nice line for himself and this could prove an acid test moment for him as he seeks to dive into the movie world. He has seen great success with The OC and, to a lesser degree, Chuck. He’s also produced the WB web series Rockville, CA, which I really have little to say on.
The question more will be over his ability to direct a feature film, as his writing ability is not in doubt. He’s not directed anything before, let alone taking on a feature film of a semi-loved novel. Good luck to him though, he certainly understands how to bring depth to characters which seem irritating on the surface.
